That awkward moment Conor McGregor references the wrong Rocky movie

In one of the more colourful lines delivered by Conor McGregor during his hour long media call this week, the Irish UFC superstar likened himself to Rocky Balboa in the movie Rocky III.

McGregor used the example of Rocky and upstart challenger Clubber Lang (played by Mr T) to stress that his newfound celebrity hasn’t affected his work ethic in the gym.

“Recently I watched Rocky III, and if you watch the start of it, he’s got mansions, seven cars and a robot that brings him coffee and he’s doing ads and talk-shows and getting lazy,” said McGregor.

“Meanwhile, Clubber Lang is in a dark alleyway sprinting throwing shots, visualising.

“I’m like Rocky III in that I have the big house, I have the cars, I have the robots bringing me coffee.

“But at the same time I’m also training. I’m training like Clubber but living life like Rocky.

The only problem?

The robot McGregor refers to appeared in Rocky IV, not Rocky III.

Trifling? Maybe, but the story has a pretty great background.

The robot, named Sico, was made by International Robotics (this is in the real world, by the way, not Hollywood) and given to Sylvester Stallone’s son, Seargeoh who has autism.

Back in the ‘80s, it was believed that robotic treatment could help autistic kids.

“We got a call from the Stallone family,” said Robert Doornick, the founder of International Robotics.

“They were very interested in how the robot could work with his son. One thing led to another and Stallone completely became enamoured with Sico, that particular character.”

Pretty soon, Stallone wrote the robot into the movie as a present Rocky gave to his loveable idiot brother-in-law Paulie.

Sico instantly generated a cult following, toured with James Brown, is in the Screen Actors Guild and, more recently, achieved the ultimate level of fame when it appeared in an episode of Family Guy.
