New Zealand's Jason Taumalolo latest rugby league star to eye NFL career

Following the trail blazed by Jarryd Hayne, the NRL and North Queensland Cowboys star has set out to pursue a career in the NFL.

North Queensland Cowboys star Jason Taumalolo is heading to the United States in a quest to become the latest National Rugby League star to pursue an NFL career.

The New Zealand international received the Cowboys' backing after a loss to Australia in the Four Nations final on Sunday.

Taumalolo would be the latest to swap NRL for NFL, with Gold Coast Titans star Jarryd Hayne having made the San Francisco 49ers' 53-man roster in 2015 before being released. The Cowboys confirmed news of the 23-year-old Taumalolo's trial early Monday.

"Jason Taumalolo heading to US for NFL testing with club's full knowledge and backing," the club tweeted.

It wasn't clear when Taumalolo, 23, plans to try out for NFL teams, but any serious run likely would have to wait until the offseason. He is listed by his NRL club at approximately 6-2, 249 pounds.

Reports earlier this year had linked Taumalolo with an NFL switch, before he played 27 games for the Cowboys in the NRL.

Taumalolo was the joint winner of the NRL's sportsmanship award and has been shortlisted for the prestigious Golden Boot Award, given to the best rugby league player in the world.
