Predicting the future - 2015 Caulfield and Thousand Guineas

The Racenet team have aimed up with their early futures pick on the 2015 Caulfield Guineas and Thousand Guineas.

Futures betting can be a risky business at the best of times but the rewards can be astronomical. This will be provided as a weekly segment throughout the spring carnival with next week's edition to feature the Epsom Handicap and The Metropolitan.

Paul Joice

CAULFIELD GUINEAS - PRESS STATEMENT ($5.50 with CrownBet): I don't think you'll get rich backing him this far out from a Group I race but on paper he clearly looks the right horse. Already a Group I winner at the mile, has tactical pace to overcome a bad gate and goes on all ground. The depth of this year's edition looks questionable so going with a proven performer looks the safest option. I expect him to run in the quinella in the Golden Rose on Saturday so maybe the odds will trim-up even further after that.

THOUSAND GUINEAS - DON'T DOUBT MAMMA ($81 with Luxbet): Worth a gamble at the price. Flashed home in the Listed Atlantic Jewel (1200m) clocking the quickest sectionals of the race. Tony McEvoy may have found the key to her by riding her quietly. A big field with pressure on could really suit her new racing style. Looks a type destined to excel over ground and in an open race offers great value.

Clinton Payne

CAULFIELD GUINEAS - PRESS STATEMENT ($5.50 CrownBet): I don't get off tipping shorties in early markets but everything points to this bloke being a major player in the Caulfield three-year-old feature. The Sydney-based three-year-olds are clearly superior to their Victorian counterparts and the Golden Rose form has proved a strong pointer to the outcome of the Caulfield Guineas since the Sydney feature's inception. Press Statement is a classy colt and he's already shown he has the qualities to be hard to toss over 1600m if he turns up at Caulfield on October 10.

THOUSAND GUINEAS - LAUCALA ($67 Bet 365): A bit left field here but it won't surprise me one bit to see this filly put her hand up for an upcoming fillies feature race after she takes on the older mares at Rosehill on Saturday and there's already precedents with a couple of three-year-old fillies, Tempt Me Not and Flamboyant Lass, beating the mares this season. When Laucala won her maiden at Canterbury she produced the turn of foot needed to be competitive in black-type company. Chris Waller has held her back, trialling her since her win a month ago and last year he bypassed the Flight Stakes with Amicus and she won the Thousand Guineas. It's a bit of a speculator but at those odds you don't have to have much on for a good result.

Tom Walter

CAULFIELD GUINEAS - PRESS STATEMENT ($5.50 Crownbet): This as short as you would want a futures bet to be but you really do have to look hard to find something to beat him. The mail is he's likely to go to the race and he's proven at the trip which is a huge plus for a spring three-year-old. Looking at the top end of the market, five of the top eight are maiden winners and nothing more, whereas this horse is a Group I winner already and has come back in good order as seen by his second placing in the Group II Run To The Rose.

THOUSAND GUINEAS - SAGARONNE ($18 Luxbet): I'm probably a bit biased as I'm on this filly at much bigger odds than currently advertised but I think $18 still offers some value. You only need to look at her to see how physically advanced she is for her age. Went from a Gold Coast maiden to a Group I placing behind Press Statement in the space of three starts last preparation which not many fillies can do. Her return in the Atlantic Jewel Stakes last Saturday was inconclusive, never tested at all in the straight and yet was still only 4-3/4 lengths from the winner. Has plenty of appeal.

Brad Waters

CAULFIELD GUINEAS - GOLD SYMPHONY ($26 with Sportsbet): It's tricky doing this exercise a few days before the Golden Rose but there's a lot to like about the way Gold Symphony goes about his work. He just gets better with every start and just does the right thing every time he steps out. He's not as flashy as his rivals but he's consistent and looks durable enough to get to the Caulfield Guineas. He's worth an each-way ticket at $26 in early betting.

THOUSAND GUINEAS - PASADENA GIRL ($7.50 with Bet 365): Peter Moody could make it a Guineas double with Pasadena Girl. She was a Group I winner in Sydney at two and showed she has come back very well with her effort at Moonee Valley last Saturday. She'll just get better with each run and the mile of the Thousand Guineas will be perfect for her third-up. She's exciting and capable of adding another Group I to her record next month. The $7.50 available might turn out to be a generous price.
